Topic HSP: The other COVID-19 Story: The Known Essential Services; Custodial Services

Our response to COVID-19 has been incredibly tasking on all of us and devastating to our nation and the world. The constant news on the subject has been depressing, with vignettes of many stories of heroes in our healthcare, first responders, teachers, and many other our public servants. What is rarely heard is the story of those that are behind the scenes, our custodial services workers, the demand they have burden, the unknown the inherited, and the misinformation they have hear. In many parts of our country custodial operations are predominantly staffed by a Hispanics workforce, most of them immigrants with a language barrier, and know they are part of our country’s frontline fighting the spread of COVID-19.

Speaker Alejandro “Alex” Ruiz, MS, CIH, CSP, CHMM, SMS, CET, CHST

Alejandro “Alex” Ruiz is the Associate Director of EHS and the University Safety Officer at Rutgers University. Alex has over 20 years’ experience in the EHS field and as an active member of the New Jersey Chapter, Region 8 and the Hispanic Safety Professional (HSP) CIG. Alex has an appointment as an Adjunct Professor at the Rutgers School of Engineering and as an instructor at the Rutgers School of Public Health.
